It is a progressive disorder severe enough to interfere with life every day and prevent and slow down daily activities. Progressive disorder means that the symptoms will get worse over time as brain cells become more injured and gradually die. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, 564,000 individuals in Canada are currently living with dementia and this number is expected to increase to 1.4 million people by 2031.

What is dementia?

The World Health Organisation describes Dementia as an umbrella term for several diseases affecting memory, other cognitive abilities and behavior that interfere with a person’s ability to maintain their activities of daily living.

There are more than 100 types of Dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common, followed by Vascular dementia, Lewy Body disease and frontal lobe dementia. Currently there is no cure.
